Public health has been defined as "the science and art of preventing disease", prolonging life and improving quality of life through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organisations, public and private, communities and individuals.

The Public Health Medicine Specialist/Medical Officer of Health position combines the statutory role of Medical Officer of Health (district wide), as designated by the Director-General of Health in terms of Section 7A (1) of the Health Act 1956, with the more general role of providing specialist public health medicine advice for the Nelson/Marlborough region.

The Public Health Medicine Specialist/Medical Officer of Health will ensure that Nelson Marlborough Health discharges its responsibilities under the relevant public health legislation.

You will be based at a Community Health Hub, either in Richmond or Blenheim, working alongside two other Public Health Medicine Specialists and with a team of analysts, health promotion and protection officers and public health nurses. You'll have a commitment to quality improvement and building an environment of excellence in the Public Health Service.

This is a permanent, full-time position. However, for the right applicant for the team, there could be the possibility of part-time hours.

They can be flexible in terms of the experience level required for this position and welcome applications from both new and experienced Public Health Physicians. You will be a qualified medical practitioner with Fellowship of the New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine (NZCPHM) or equivalent, with NZ registration and practising certificate, or be eligible for the same.

Working in a close-knit team of highly motivated professionals you will be full of energy and enthusiasm and have an innovative streak when it comes to working with cross sector partners. You will inspire, encourage, support and model best public health practice for colleagues and staff, and will demonstrate the ability to be agile and work flexibly in a changing health environment.
